How Much Does a Custom CNC Fixture Cost in 2026?

In-house hidden time, consultant rates, and fixed-price digital design services, with the full payback math.

September 6, 2026|7 min read|2026 pricing, real numbers

A custom CNC fixture design costs between $1,000 and $5,500 when you buy it as a digital CAD design you manufacture in-house. Hiring a fixture design consultant typically runs $2,000 to $8,000 per project plus weeks of waiting. Doing it in-house costs the most of all: your senior machinist or engineer pulled off billable work for 20 to 40 hours.

Below is the full math on all three options, what drives the price up, and how to figure out what a fixture is actually worth to your shop.

What You Are Actually Paying For

A fixture is not a lump of aluminum with holes in it. You are paying for:

  • Locating logic. How the part finds the same position every single time, within your tolerance.

  • Clamping strategy. Holding force where the cut pushes, deflection where it does not matter.

  • A bill of materials with exact part numbers. So your purchaser can order everything in one session instead of reverse engineering a generic model.

  • Delivery time. Days, not the weeks a consultancy timeline usually runs.

Anyone can draw a block with tapped holes. You are paying for the 20-40 hours of shop floor experience per design that decides whether the fixture survives contact with a real production schedule.

Option 1: Design It In-House (The Hidden Cost)

Most shops try this first. The logic feels right: "We have Fusion/SolidWorks and a good machinist."

The problem is who does the work. Your best machinist is your highest billable resource. A first-time fixture design for a production part takes 20-40 hours: concept, modeling, checking clamp forces, machining time for the fixture body itself, and at least one revision when something does not line up.

At a loaded shop rate of $75-150 per hour, that is $1,500 to $6,000 in lost billable time, plus the machine that machinist is not running. And the design quality depends entirely on how much fixturing experience that person has. For most shops, in-house is the slowest and most expensive option, it just does not feel like it because no invoice arrives.

Option 2: Hire a Fixture Design Consultant

Consultants and design houses charge either hourly ($100-200/hour) or per project. A custom production fixture design typically lands at $2,000 to $8,000, and timelines are usually quoted in weeks. Revision rounds are often billed extra, and most consultants hand you a model file but not a manufacturing-ready package with a sourced bill of materials.

The good ones are worth it. The problem is finding the good ones, waiting for delivery, and paying consulting rates for work that follows a fairly standard pattern once you know the machine, the part, and the batch size.

Option 3: Buy a Custom Design as a Digital Product

This is the category FixtureFlex 3D belongs to: custom fixture and pallet designs delivered as downloadable CAD packages, designed for your specific machine and part, priced like a product instead of a consulting engagement.

FixtureFlex 3D pricing (2026):

PackageWhat it isPrice
Pallet Base DesignThe quick-change foundation, one per machine$1,500 one-time
Add-on Fixture DesignA fixture for one part, fits your existing base$1,000 one-time
Starter BundleBase plus one fixture$2,500 one-time
Pro BundleBase plus three fixtures (most popular)$5,500 one-time
Optimization Add-onMonthly design tweaks and new fixture variations$149/month

Every package includes CAD files in STEP format, 2D PDF drawings, a bill of materials with exact Mitee-Bite part numbers, assembly instructions and toolpath suggestions. You manufacture everything in-house, so you control material cost, lead time and quality. Delivery is guaranteed within 72 hours of completed project intake, backed by a Day-One Fit Guarantee: if the design needs modifications to work on your machine, you get a corrected design within 12 hours plus a $500 downtime credit.

What Makes a Fixture Design Cost More

Whether you pay a consultant or a design service, the same factors drive the price:

  • Number of operations. A part that needs 3 setups needs 3 fixtures or one pallet system that handles all of them.

  • Tolerance. Plus/minus 0.05 mm costs more thinking than plus/minus 0.2 mm.

  • Clamping access. Parts with thin walls or finished surfaces need edge clamps or zero-point solutions, not vises.

  • Changeover frequency. More changeovers means the fixture earns more, and justifies more design effort up front.

  • Machine type. A 5-axis tombstone setup is a bigger design problem than a 2-axis VMC job.

If a shop quotes you a fixture price without asking about your machine, your T-slot pattern and your batch size, that is a red flag. Those three questions determine the whole design.

The Real Question: What Is a Fixture Worth?

Price only makes sense next to payback. Run your own numbers with our free Setup Time Calculator, but here is a typical example:

  • 1 part per cycle on a vise, 240 minutes average setup per changeover

  • 8 changeovers per month, machine rate $75/hour

  • That is 32 hours and $2,100 per month lost to setup work on one machine

A $2,500 Starter Bundle that cuts setup time by even half pays for itself in about 2.4 months. In our anchor case study, a Norwegian shop serving maritime customers reduced setup time by 93% and went from one part per cycle to three parts per cycle on the same machine. Verified in live production, not on paper.

A fixture design is not a cost, it is a machine hour recovery project.

If it does not pay for itself inside a few months, do not buy it.

Questions to Ask Before You Pay Anyone

  1. 1

Do you design for my specific machine and T-slot pattern, or do you sell generic models?

  2. 2

What exactly is in the delivery? (STEP files, 2D drawings, sourced BOM, assembly instructions, toolpath suggestions)

  3. 3

What happens if it does not fit on my machine? Who pays for the revision?

  4. 4

    How fast can you deliver?

  5. 5

Can I manufacture it myself with components I already buy?

If you get clean answers to all five, the price is almost irrelevant, because the payback math does the talking.
